Golf Lovers Scenic Day Trip
Today, we will unpack the golf lover’s perfect scenic day trip - because I bet you didn’t know that nearby features the Guinness’ Book of World Records “The Longest Golf Hole in the United States”!
Meadows Farms Golf Course is the type of location where no one is a stranger. You’ll be greeted upon arrival by “Kinley” - the resident yellow retriever - who prides herself in being a more popular attraction than the golf course itself!
What about the golf? Home to three completely different nines, Meadows Farms offers challenge and surprise at each tee box. It uniquely calls itself a no frills championship course. If it’s the bucket list you’re after - head to the Longest Hole - a par 6, and when played from the championship tee is 841 yards, recognized by the Guinness’ Book of World Records as “The Longest Golf Hole in the United States.” The design gives every level of golfer an option on how to play the hole - while challenging for the golf pro and low-handicapper, it offers a fair test for the high-handicapper.
Fun fact, the course weaves its way through a pre-civil war homestead and cemetery and on the very ground where civil war battles were fought. While there, you’ll enjoy views of the champion purebred cattle grazing on adjacent fields.
If you love the course so much you are dreaming to stay to enjoy the scenic view - interestingly there is a cottage available on the course that sleeps 8 that comes with an unlimited golf package.
A Scenic Drive to a Rustic Venue for a Glass of Wine
When rounding out an early game has whet your whistle for a local authentic experience - a short scenic drive away is a super charming mom and pop winery. Chateau MerrillAnne seeks to bring the finest of the vineyard home to your table. Farmer owners Kenny and Emily White offer a relaxed and down to earth wine tasting experience in an old barn - described as most unlikely place to find such good wine - a working farm! At last year’s 24th State Fair of Virginia Commercial Wine Competition, their 2015 Petit Verdot achieved a gold, and their 2016 Viognier came home with a silver.
Also, they’re known as a local picnic destination - bring your basket to their open meadows, grab a table in the vineyard and eat among the grapes, set up under the sail shade on the deck, or in the air conditioned tasting room.
A Casual Plate on a Historic Main Street
If it's a casual and reliable meal at a well respected table that you seek to round out our day trip - then head into the main street of the small town of nearby historic Orange and sit at the Light Well. A kitchen, a tavern and a coffee house - the Light Well serves lunch, dinner, and brunch and offers a selection of locally roasted coffee as well as beer and a seasonal wine list. With a 4.5 Trip Advisor rating and over 250 happy reviewers, it will offer you a casual plate and charming atmosphere for everyone.
