Music in the Vineyard at Hammerstone Cellar

Some of you have known members of our armed forces who gave their life for our country, or others who came home disabled after fighting and serving bravely. We should remember that many of our brave veterans are getting on in years. Few opportunities remain for us to say thank you to these heroes and to let them know of our admiration and gratitude for their many sacrifices. The second Saturday of November we will have a chance to honor veterans from throughout Central Virginia in the Gordonsville Annual Veteran's Parade. Our hope is to have as many veterans as possible marching and riding, along with their supporters honoring them with patriotic music and floats in the parade. Come and feel that patriotism, and be sure to bring your children to enjoy the pageantry and to instill the values of respect and honor that has made this country great. Who would have thought that three homes built in the Greek Revival style by the master builder, Major William A. Jennings, could be found in the tiny hamlet of Orange (pop. only 10,670 in 1850)? The style, harkening back to classic Greek architecture, was appreciated in the mid-1800s for being an expression of local nationalism and civic virtue, free of aristocratic and church associations. In addition, Spotswood Lodge, an 1850s farmhouse recently converted into a bed and breakfast, is open for tour.

Learn 19th century construction from Montpelier’s expert craftsmen and preservationists as you reconstruct slave quarters from the Madison period. This structure will be 12ftx14ft and feature a clay floor, log chimney and is based on a site we found through archaeological excavations. Participants will spend a week learning wood working and joinery techniques that were used in Madison's era. Based on information derived from archaeological excavations, we will be recreating the cabin that was lived in by Madison's field slaves. While participating in the program, you will stay in the antebellum plantation house, “Arlington House,” or for those wanting private rooms, there are other housing options at Montpelier and at local B&Bs. For more information about how to participate in this program, please contact Matthew Reeves, Director of Archaeology and Landscape Restoration, at dig@montpelier.org with the subject line "Log Cabin Expedition Information."

The registration packet is available below. The length of the ride is between 7 and 10 miles round-trip (route may change based on weather and trail conditions), and the terrain is pasture land, wooded trails, and gravel roads, so please make sure horses are shod accordingly. We highly recommend that horses are shod, without shoes some horses have experienced fatigue on the gravel roads. This is a group trail ride, there will be a trail master who will lead the ride. This first portion of the ride is optional since it will expose horses to crowds of observers. Lunch will be provided at the end of the ride. Amnon Cohen began his jewelry career in 1963 working for a jewelry manufacturer in New York City (NYC).

By 1973, he opened his own repair business in the Jewelry District of NYC. His expertise was in specialty orders, line creations, handmade model making and repairs. His customers included: individual clients, antique jewelry dealers, boutique shops in upstate NY and NJ, and large NYC storefronts such as Michael C. Fina, Paul Seiden and Erwin Pearl. Having worked in the heartbeat of the jewelry world for 44 years, Amnon has seen almost every style of jewelry come across his repair bench. Amnon is sought out for his creativity and problem-solving skills when repairing and creating pieces, especially the ones that are delicate and difficult; he is known for tackling pieces other jewelers will not touch. Amnon's artistic talent, natural curiosity and thinking outside the [jewelry] box, is a true credit to his ability to repair or custom build beautiful pieces. He believes this leads to better design, smarter repairs and, oftentimes, a cost savings for the customer. That creativity and curiosity still keeps him going. Amnon has now opened a shop in Orange, and is eager to continue creating and fixing jewelry. He is available for repairs, consultations, special orders, and antique accessory repair.

The Arts Center houses a large gallery and gallery shop, classrooms, and The Orange Studio. The gallery provides exhibit space to display the work of emerging artists in eight shows annually.

Virginia artists stock the gallery shop with fine contemporary art, pottery, sculpture, fiber art, glassware, metalwork and jewelry. Classes offered for children and adults include drawing, painting, clay, stained glass, basketry and a variety of other arts and crafts. The Orange Studio is an Arts Center program for adult artists with mental illness and/or learning disabilities. The Arts Center provides these artists with studio space, art supplies and artistic support for the creation of their work. Artists participating in the program are gaining recognition, exhibiting nationally. When their work is sold, half of the proceeds go to the artist, and the other half helps to fund the program. The Arts Center also organizes public art projects (several of which can be viewed around town), free film fests and open studio tours, and offers community outreach to serve children, seniors and others (over 5,000 to date) who, due to age, income or handicap, would not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in the arts.

Governor Barbour’s mansion, now preserved as a historic landmark after a Christmas Day fire in 1884, was designed by Thomas Jefferson to be the grandest residence in Orange County.

With brick walls laid in Flemish bond, Palladian porticoes on two sides and a splendid central octagonal parlor, the Barbour mansion was the seat of a thriving agriculture estate of early Virginia. Barbour was Virginia’s first Governor (1812-1814), U.S. Senator, Secretary of War, Ambassador to Great Britain, and President of the Albemarle Agricultural Society as his neighbor James Madison had been before him. He is buried with members of his family on the estate in a simple gravesite, now preserved by Barboursville Vineyards.

This beautifully restored Greek revival structure was built as a railroad hotel in 1860.

Before the Civil War, The Exchange Hotel, with its high ceiling parlors and grand veranda, welcomed passengers from two rail lines: the Virginia Central Railroad and the Orange Alexandria Railroad. During the war soldiers, supplies and the wounded were transported on these railroads to Gordonsville. The hotel became The Receiving Hospital, which provided care for 70,000 soldiers, Confederate and Union. During the reconstruction period, this hospital served newly freed slaves as a Freedman’s Bureau Hospital. The museum presents several re-enactments year round. Please visit the museum website to see current happenings.

The wines of Barboursville Vineyards are so consistently honored in competitions and demanded by wine stewards, as they are -- that Palladio Restaurant is so respected by food enthusiasts of every generation and critical perspective, extending to the James Beard House in Manhattan -- that there is no more than one place on earth, where the only house within sight of your bedroom is a historic landmark designed by Thomas Jefferson -- this only begins to explain Barboursville Vineyards.

North Pamunkey Baptist Church was founded in 1774 by Aaron Bledsoe & Elijah Craig. The early church, which was a one room log structure, was known by several names including: North Fork of the Pamunkey, Bledsoe's Meeting House and North Pamunkey Meeting House. Aaron Bledsoe was pastor for 32 years. During his leadership the church grew from a membership of 20 to 350 in 1806. The original church was replaced in 1830 with a wooden meeting house. A Sunday School was organized in 1836, making North Pamunkey one of the oldest Sunday Schools in the Commonwealth. The present brick sanctuary was built in 1851. In 1952, under the leadership of Rev. Bernard Le Seur, an educational wing was added to the rear of the church. In 1998, a Fellowship Hall was constructed adjacent to the main church, and was named after Mrs. Julia Burrus, the project's guiding light and longtime member.

The Gilmore Cabin is a post-Civil War African-American’s house on the Montpelier property.

Former Madison slave George Gilmore built this log cabin for his family in the early 1870s. President Madison’s nephew owned the land. George Gilmore was more than 90 years old when he purchased the house and 16 acres for $560, just before the death of Dr. James Ambrose Madison in 1901. The property offers a glimpse of what life was like for African-Americans in the years during the Reconstruction era. Museum educators will be on hand to demonstrate the techniques of 19th-century farm life. The Gilmore Cabin is located on the west side of Route 20. Delight in the spectacular views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and enjoy the many special events held annually at historic Montpelier.

Orange Baptist Church was chartered in 1856. Fires destroyed the first two sanctuaries. On November 8, 1908 about two-thirds of the town, including the second sanctuary, was destroyed by fire. A new pipe organ that had not been played in a Sunday service was to have been dedicated on the Sunday following the fire. Worship in the present sanctuary, Neo-Gothic in style, began in August 1909. The ceiling of the sanctuary is coffered with acorn finials and unpainted bead board. The sanctuary has three tripartite lancet-arched stained glass windows.

On the winding roads of Route 20 in Orange County, Virginia stands a century-old train depot, home to the local Montpelier Station, Virginia post office.

On February 21, 2010, it became the home of James Madison’s Montpelier’s newest exhibit— The Montpelier Train Depot: In the Time of Segregation. In 2008, the Montpelier Foundation undertook a one-year renovation of the Depot. They restored the Depot to the way it was in the 1910s in order to document a time of legalized segregation in Virginia and throughout the United States. Montpelier dedicated The Montpelier Train Depot: In the Time of Segregation to the memory of Russell Coffin Childs, a former Montpelier special projects director. It was his vision to restore the Montpelier Train Depot to educate the public about the “Jim Crow” era. Thanks to Childs’ vision and dedication, Montpelier will be able to share the truth of all of our American history with generations to come.

WarPlay Paintball was created by two Marine veterans who have enjoyed the sport of paintball since the early 1980's. They became tired of playing on fields that were thrown together with little thought about design, terrain, tactics, or even purpose. "Not all Paintball Fields are created equal, come and experience the difference" Is more than just their motto, building better designed fields is their primary mission at WarPlay Paintball. St. Thomas Episcopal Church was built in 1833-34, and copied after Jefferson’s only known ecclesiastical work. Several Tiffany stained-glass windows grace this historic church. The "Madison Silver," a silver chalice and paten crafted by Fuller White of London in 1766-67 and engraved with the parish name, was given by Frances Taylor Madison, the grandmother of President James Madison. General Robert E. Lee attended St. Thomas regularly, and a plaque has been placed on the pew where he sat for worship.

The Courthouse building is a historic landmark in the town of Orange.

Constructed in 1859 and designed by Charles Haskins of Washington, D.C., the Italianate-style courthouse is characterized by its centrally located, three-stage tower with overhanging eaves. It is the town’s third courthouse, the first having been completed in 1749 and the second courthouse, built 1802-04. Those two earlier courthouses were located on the public lot, partially occupied by the Orange Train Station. In August 1862, a brisk skirmish between three Union Cavalry regiments and the Confederate 7th Virginia Calvary erupted in front of the Courthouse.

Todd recieved his BA in Fine Art from Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, Virginia in 1980. From that time on he has operated a sign business where there has always been a fuzzy distinction between "sign" and "art". In recent years, he turned "serious" in his pursuit of fine art and opened a studio in Orange, Virginia. Todd has worked in oil and watercolor but now works in acrylic for its versatility and permanence. He has sold hundreds of prints and originals. Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Wilderness, and Spotsylvania--this is America's battleground, where the Civil War roared to its bloody climax.

The Wilderness Battlefield is part of the Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park. No place more vividly reflects the War's tragic cost in all its forms. A town bombarded and looted. Farms large and small ruined. Refugees by the thousands forced into the countryside. More than 85,000 men wounded; 15,000 killed--most in graves unknown. The Battle of the Wilderness was fought on May 5-6, 1864. It was the beginning of the Overland Campaign, the bloodiest campaign in American history and the turning point in the war in the Eastern Theatre.

The Chicken Halves are grilled over live coals akin to the roadside BBQ’s that the Rotary, Kiwanis, and Fire departments have become famous for serving on Saturdays across the Eastern seaboard. These anchors are highlighted with freshly baked rolls, cornbread and pumpkin muffins. Homemade pickles, salads, and slaws are served with the sandwiches, and sides include Brunswick Stew, Donna’s Baked Beans, Hushpuppies, Macaroni and Cheese, and even Collard Greens! And don't overlook the desserts, we have homemade cupcakes, cookies, and brownies. Call-in orders are welcome. We also feature family-size meals and servings by the pound to go!
