Civil War

Orange County was unique in that it was involved in all four years of the Civil War.  From battlefields to churches to homes, much remains to bear witness to those years.

- The Wilderness Battlefield where Lee faced Grant for the first time.
- Ellwood Manor, a home that served as a Confederate hospital, as headquarters of three Union generals, and was the burial site for Stonewall Jackson’s amputated arm.
- The Exchange Hotel, originally built as a railroad hotel in 1860, it became a receiving hospital during the war and provided care for 70,000 soldiers.
- St. Thomas’s Episcopal Church built in 1833, where Robert E. Lee worshipped.
- Gordonsville Presbyterian Church, built about 1855, where Stonewall Jackson worshipped.

Wineries

- Barboursville Vineyards, home to award-winning wines, a five-star restaurant and 830 acres of beautiful rolling hills.
- Horton Vineyards, an old-world Tudor style winery with underground stone cellars, largest grape producer in Virginia.
- Reynard Florence Vineyard, the perfect place to explore a true family vineyard or just escape with an award-winning glass of wine.
