Can you smell the pumpkin spice? Fall is in the air in Orange County, Virginia, and we couldn’t be more thrilled for the chill. From corn mazes to festivals, Orange County has plenty to offer when it comes to celebrating autumn.
Corn Maze at Liberty Mills Farm
Virginia’s largest corn maze, Liberty Mills Farm’s corn maze clocks in at a massive 25 acres. Lucky for the directionally challenged, Liberty Mills divides the maze into 4 separate trails so you can choose your own adventure. Will you test your wits with the trivia maze or test your determination with the hole punch maze? Maybe you’ll even dare to try the flashlight maze after dark! Liberty Mills also offers hay rides, pumpkin picking, and a farm market, so if you prefer to do your mazes on paper you’re still in for a good time. The maze is open through November 7, so get your family, besties, or coworkers together for this “farmtastic” adventure.
Picker’s Paradise at Market at Grelen
A celebration of the prettier things in life, Picker’s Paradise is an artisan market featuring locally sourced and crafted furniture, jewelry, home décor, and more. Hosted by The Market at Grelen, visitors can also enjoy wine tastings and gourmet snacks from the market’s shop and café. Feel free to drag the hubby along—the Market at Grelen also boasts 3.9 miles worth of hiking trails to keep him busy. The event spans from September 22–23 and provides plenty of opportunity to shop local, eat local, and drink local. Even better, the Market at Grelen regularly offers great fall fun with PYO apples and more!
Gordonsville Fall Festival at Fireman’s Fairgrounds
Family fun also comes in the form of the Gordonsville Fall Festival, held this year on October 7, at the Fireman’s Fairgrounds. Enjoy local vendors, food trucks, and giving back to the community—all proceeds benefit the Gordonsville Volunteer Fire Company. The festival will have plenty of free activities, too: the “Kids Korner” provides free face painting, “Krazy Hair,” and other games for young ones.
Fall Fiber Festival and Montpelier Sheep Dog Trials
What’s better on a cool fall day than fleece and wool? The 30th Annual Fall Fiber Festival features workshops, displays, animal exhibits, sheep dog trials, hands-on demonstrations, a fleece sale, fiber and crafts vendors, music and more! This event is held on the grounds of James Madison’s Montpelier and begins on the same day as the Gordonsville Fall Festival, so why not enjoy both? The fun continues Sunday, October 8. Come on out and celebrate this Orange County tradition!
Chili & Brewfest at Orange County Fairgrounds
If you’re looking for a little more “adult” in your fall activities, look no further than Orange County Chamber of Commerce’s Chili and Brewfest at the Orange County Fairgrounds on October 21. Featuring live music by local band The Worx, beer tastings from local breweries, and a chili cook-off; this fest will satisfy the manliest of fall cravings. You can even help judge the chili cook-off! Best of all, your tasting ticket includes a miniature tasting mug that you can take home as a souvenir. Though there will be beer tastings, this event is family friendly and will feature activities for the kids as well.
Montpelier Hunt Races at James Madison’s Montpelier
Rounding out the season, there’s the Montpelier Hunt Races on November 4. A tradition dating back to 1929, the horse races are a must for history buffs and equestrian enthusiasts alike. Start with the Jack Russell Terrier races and enjoy tailgating, a hat contest, catering, and wine all day. Dolley Madison would be proud to see all the hustle and bustle at Montpelier!
Orange County is simply stunning, especially in the fall. Come for the events, stay for the pick-your-own farms, walking trails, skydiving, or golf—there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy nature’s beauty during autumn in Orange County.
